6 Things No One Tells You to Pack for College

Posted on July 23, 2019 by Ashley

When I was preparing to leave for college, I read countless packing lists to figure out what I should bring. I basically lived at Target, and amazon prime became my best friend to get everything that I needed. However, there were a few things that I didn’t realize I would need but couldn’t have survived without.

A Couple of Nice Outfits

When I left for school, I brought one dress with me that could be a little dressed up, not anticipating that I would have occasions to wear nicer clothes. However, multiple times during both semesters, I was calling my mom asking her to send me something to wear. I’m not talking about business casual interview outfits or ball gowns. I’m talking about a dress, skirt, or something similar that can be dressed up for a special event or two on campus.

Art Supplies

What would I have done without my art supplies this past year? I really have no idea because I used them so often. I had markers, washi tape, and watercolors with me that I brought back to school after my fall break in October. My friends and I spent many nights making mandalas, painting pictures, or decorating our walls with washi tape. Art supplies were great to have on Friday nights when we were exhausted and just wanted something relaxing to do.

Portable Charger

Portable Chargers found on Amazon

My portable charged SAVED me so many times this year. Whenever I went out with friends, it was almost guaranteed that someone’s phone would be dead. My portable charger made sure their phone was charged in case of an emergency, or some good pictures!

Mass Transit Card

This is especially important if you are going to school in or near a city with access to public transit. In Boston, we have the MBTA, and it’s the best way to get around. A transit card usually costs less per ride than when paying without one, so it’s a great way to save money and explore the area.

Stuffed Animal

What better way to have a reminder of home and something to decorate with than a stuffed animal? I brought my favorite sock monkey to school with me, and it was the best idea. It added another piece to make my bed look put together, and at the end of the day, it was there for a hug goodnight!

Dorm Shoes

Birkenstocks Arizona style shoe

At any school with a hall bathroom, shower shoes are a must. However, I recommend another pair of shoes that I call my dorm shoes. I got a pair of Birkenstocks for my dorm shoes because I wanted something that I could walk around the building in without having to put on real shoes. I could slip them on with the fuzzy socks that I was almost always wearing, and go down the hall. A great pair of sturdy slippers would also be a great alternative!

I think that the Arizona style shoe from Birkenstocks is a great option, see this link for all the amazing colors and patterns that they come in!

I love this line from today’s Gospel because it reminds me that God is with me, walking beside me on my journey and He isn’t going to let me wander astray. It’s easy with online classes and not much to do to get stuck inside, surrounded by all you have to do. But when I walk outside, I’m reminded of the beauty in our world that we should celebrate and it gives me hope that we will come out on the other side of this better for it. God works in strange ways sometimes so here’s to trusting, hoping, and having faith
